Breaking the Rules in Style: Combining Silver And Gold Jewelry

August 26 2021

It's time for a new era of fashion, and anything goes. Read on for tips on how to mix jewelry metals (gasp!) and create a unique, daring look.

RULES ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN

It's time someone says it loud and clear: These are the 2020s, and when it comes to fashion, anything goes. From patterns to crocs to your mom's ruffly vintage shirts, if it works for you, it works. Rules are expected to be broken, and it's time to stop letting them hold you back from creating your best look. After all, life is too short to color inside the lines.

We asked the Oak and Luna resident stylist to give us some must-try tips on how to mix metals. "Silver and gold are staples in jewelry boxes everywhere," she says. "But when it comes down to pairing them together, most people feel they need to match." That's where breaking the rules comes in. "The challenge is to let go and pair them together in a way that makes sense. So how do you do it without looking ridiculous? Here, I'll show you."

Styling mixed Gold and Silver jewelry is invadable!
And this is our way of doing it!

ALL THE WAY

"Start with a piece of each - a silver chain bracelet and a gold herringbone bracelet, for example," she explains. "The idea is to create contrast between the two metals, so, at least when you begin, stick to pieces that are on opposite ends of the color spectrum. You may already have a few mixed metals bracelets or mixed metals necklaces that you wear together, but dare to expand on that by wearing mixed metal earrings too. To keep the style cohesive, choose two tones or two textures that go well with each other. Another great hack is using the little details to tie everything together: wear pieces that vary in metal but have a similar shape, style, stones, or textures - like the Ivy paperclip bracelet and Ivy paperclip necklace in silver and rose gold. This way, you can make any mix and match jewelry set looks like it was meant to be worn together."

Mixing metals opens up a whole new world for you. Finally, you're not limited to pairing this silver necklace with that specific silver ring. Instead, you can mix it up by pairing a silver choker with a gold necklace, and you'll be amazed at how much better they look together. "Despite tradition saying otherwise, mixing gold and silver jewelry brings out the warmth and shine in both, so don't hesitate to give it a try," she suggests. It may take some time to find your personal style, but you'll be on your way to some exciting new combos. Remember, mixing metals is all about creating a unique look for yourself." The ideal way to take your mixed look one step higher? Go big with a look that says 'notice me'. Statement pieces are perfect for this, as they're meant to grab attention and make you stand out. "Try a bold metal like silver or rose gold as part of your statement piece stack, or layer different textures and stones.
